Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
