A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the hours before former President Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
